The Music of the Ainur
There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Ilúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him, and he was glad. But for a long while they sang only each alone, or but few together, while the rest hearkened; for each comprehended only that part of me mind of Ilúvatar from which he came, and in the understanding of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they listened they came to deeper understanding, and increased in unison and harmony.
And it came to pass that Ilúvatar called together all the Ainur and declared to them a mighty theme, unfolding to them things greater and more wonderful than he had yet revealed; and the glory of its beginning and the splendour of it send amazed the Ainur, so that they bowed before Ilúvatar and were silent.
Then Ilúvatar said to them: 'Of the theme that I have declared to you, I will now that ye make in harmony together a Great Music. And since I have kindled you with the Flame Imperishable, ye shall show forth your powers in adorning this theme, each with his own thoughts and devices, if he will. But I win sit and hearken, and be glad that through you great beauty has been wakened into song.'
Then the voices of the Ainur, like unto harps and lutes, and pipes and trumpets, and viols and organs, and like unto countless choirs singing with words, began to fashion the theme of Ilúvatar to a great music; and a sound arose of endless interchanging melodies woven in harmony that passed beyond hearing into the depths and into the heights, and the places of the dwelling of Ilúvatar were filled to overflowing, and the music and the echo of the music went out into the Void, and it was not void. Never since have the Ainur made any music like to this music, though it has been said that a greater still shall be made before Ilúvatar by the choirs of the Ainur and the Children of Ilúvatar after the end of days. Then the themes of Ilúvatar shall be played aright, and take Being in the moment of their utterance, for all shall then understand fully his intent in their part, and each shall know the comprehension of each, and Ilúvatar shall give to their thoughts the secret fire, being well pleased.

Havia Eru, o Único, que em Arda é chamado de Ilúvatar. Ele criou primeiro os Ainur, os Sagrados, gerados por seu pensamento, e eles lhe faziam companhia antes que tudo o mais fosse criado. E ele lhes falou, propondo-lhes temas musicais; e eles cantaram em sua presença, e ele se alegrou. Entretanto, durante muito tempo, eles cantaram cada um sozinho ou apenas alguns juntos, enquanto os outros escutavam, pois cada um compreendia apenas aquela parte da mente de Ilúvatar da qual havia brotado e evoluía devagar na compreensão de seus irmãos. Não obstante, de tanto escutar, chegaram a uma compreensão mais profunda, tornando-se mais consonantes e harmoniosos.
E aconteceu de Ilúvatar reunir todos os Ainur e lhes indicar um tema poderoso, desdobrando diante de seus olhos imagens ainda mais grandiosas e esplêndidas do que havia revelado até então; e a glória de seu início e o esplendor de seu final tanto abismaram os Ainur, que eles se curvaram diante de Ilúvatar e emudeceram.
Disse-lhes então Ilúvatar: -A partir do tema que lhes indiquei, desejo agora que criem juntos, em harmonia, uma Música Magnífica. E, como eu os inspirei com a Chama Imperecível, vocês vão demonstrar seus poderes ornamentando esse tema, cada um com seus próprios pensamentos e recursos, se assim o desejar. Eu porém me sentarei para escutar; e me alegrarei, pois, através de vocês, uma grande beleza terá sido despertada em forma de melodia.
E então as vozes dos Ainur, semelhantes a harpas e alaúdes, a flautas e trombetas, a violas e órgãos, e a inúmeros coros cantando com palavras, começaram a dar forma ao tema de Ilúvatar, criando uma sinfonia magnífica; e surgiu um som de melodias em eterna mutação, entretecidas em harmonia, as quais, superando a audição, alcançaram as profundezas e as alturas; e as moradas de Ilúvatar encheram-se até transbordar; e a música e o eco da música saíram para o Vazio, e este não estava mais vazio. Nunca, desde então, os Ainur fizeram uma música como aquela, embora tenha sido dito que outra ainda mais majestosa será criada diante de Ilúvatar pelos coros dos Ainur e dos Filhos de Ilúvatar, após o final dos tempos Então, os temas de Ilúvatar serão desenvolvidos com perfeição e irão adquirir Existência no momento em que ganharem voz, pois todos compreenderão plenamente o intento de Ilúvatar para cada um, e cada um terá a compreensão do outro; e Ilúvatar, sentindo-se satisfeito, concederá a seus pensamentos o fogo secreto.
